  16.         ECU is a Sky Visualization Program for Microsoft Windows 3.x 
  17. called "The Earth Centered Universe".  It is capable of simulating
  18. many of the features of the earth based sky.  This includes, but is not
  19. limited to the stars, planets, sun, moon, and "deep sky" objects.  ECU
  20. is designed as an observing tool for the observing amateur astronomer,
  21. but is equally useful to the "armchair" astronomer or other interested
  22. person.

  24.         ECU is designed to operate on a PC from within the Microsoft
  25. Windows 3.x environment.  Some of the features of ECU are listed below:

  27.        - fast compared to many commercial packages - mostly integer math
  28.          so math processor is not needed, but is supported to improve
  29.          speed of solar system calculations, etc.
  30.        - low and high accuracy solar system calculations supported        
  31.        - colorful display
  32.        - continuous display of LMT, UTC, lat/long, RA/DEC, AZ/ALT, field
  33.          size, and star mag limit
  34.        - databases: Yale star catalogue to 6.5 magnitude
  35.                     SAO star catalogue to 9.5 magnitude (optional)
  36.                     SAC deep sky database (over 10,000 objects)
  37.                     planets, sun, moon, and comets
  38.        - very easy to use - zoom box, center image, zoom in/out, etc. all
  39.          done with the mouse.  Scroll bars for RA and DEC or Alt/Az.  Hot
  40.          keys and buttons for common functions
  41.        - click on an object and an information box pops up
  42.        - measure angular separation with the mouse
  43.        - load and save all settings to named configuration files
  44.        - undo last operation
  45.        - time set as LMT, UTC, or system clock (daylight savings flag, too.)
  46.        - time format as 24 hour or am/pm
  47.        - observer's location entered by lat/long or pick list of preprogrammed
  48.          cities (add your own, too)
  49.        - control the effects of parallax, nutation, precession, light travel
  50.          time, and aberration
  51.        - white or black sky background
  52.        - set magnitude limits of deep sky and stars (with scroll bars)
  53.        - select type of deep sky objects displayed (with check boxes)
  54.        - displays horizon line, ecliptic line, ra/dec grid (fine and course),
  55.          zenith marker, constellation lines, labels for bright stars,
  56.          constellations, messiers, etc.

  77.         ECU is SHAREWARE.  The SHAREWARE VERSION is distributed as the
  78. file ECUSHA.EXE (a self-extracting archive), and I assure you that is is 
  79. not the "crippled" software.  It only lacks some of the advanced features 
  80. which required several databases which are too large to distribute
  81. by normal SHAREWARE methods.

  83.         If you try ECU and like it, I ask that you register it.  Registering 
  84. ECU costs only $35 US and brings an enhanced version of the program (to fully 
  85. meet features described above).  An optional SAO star catalogue is available
  86. for $20 US.  If you cannot obtain the shareware version ECU, a copy can be 
  87. obtained for your review from the author for $10 US.
